In my February 2011, I wrote of what I deemed the “most important commodity in the world” – RICE…

Ranting Andy: Rice, Not Oil – The Most Important Commodity in the World

…or more specifically, one’s need to secure food in an in increasingly inflationary world; not to mention, one beset with expanding incidences of NATURAL DISASTERS…

July is hottest month on record; drought expands to 63 percent of United States

…and MONEY PRINTING; in the latter case, particularly in nations where populations already spend a large percentage of income on food…

India’s Food Inflation Quickens to 12.21%, a Nine-Month High

Modern farming technology is formidable. However, the aforementioned forces negate essentially ALL advances it its realm.  Moreover, the inexorable population explosion blunts all efforts to maintain sustainable supplies of cost-effective food; creating, per se, a “PEAK FOOD” phenomenon.

Think about it; when I was born in 1970, the world had roughly 3.8 billion denizens.  Assuming an average lifespan of roughly 75 years, the global population will be more than 9.0 billion when I die – nearly triple the 1970 level…

Ironically, my birth date nearly coincided with the August 1971 abandonment of the gold standard; ushering in the most horrific MONEY PRINTING in GLOBAL history…

…which is probably why Milk prices – among others – have more than quadrupled in my lifetime…

…which brings me to the topic of today’s RANT; inspired by the below graph, depicting surging global demand growth and plunging inventories of arable land…

I remember touring the jungles of Cameroon, Africa in February 2009 – enroute to my former employer’s cobalt mine; when we passed a rich tract that stood out like a sore thumb; i.e, hundreds of acres of “paddy,” where rice grows plentifully.

Below is an actual photo of the land, which we pulled off the road to take pictures of.  When I asked about this wondrous “oasis,” I was shocked to hear the Chinese government had just bought ALL of it, in their relentless pursuit of valuable natural resources.

Truly mind-boggling, as this was the ONE significant rice paddy in the nation, and China’s desperate government not only found it, but made the Cameroonian government – which itself deals with insufferable civilian poverty – an “offer they couldn’t refuse”…

I cannot emphasize more that my message of PROTECTION is NOT just about hedging one’s “net worth,” but preparing for shortages of key ITEMS OF REAL VALUE; particularly when faced with “THE MOST ALARMING TREND ON EARTH.”

PROTECT YOURSELF, and do it NOW!
